We are experiencing an unparalleled boom in the already significant biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, particularly in the Boston area. A January 1999 study by the accounting firm Ernst & Young shows that New England area has surpassed San Francisco, for the first time, in the formation of firms searching for gene-based drugs. It is estimated that the Massachusetts biotechnology industry now employs triple the number of employees that it did in 1991 (25,000 currently and increasing). Our practice-oriented, professional M.S. Program in Bioinformatics therefore has a strong foundation in our geographical region.
"Scientists cross-trained in computer science and molecular biology are essential partners in the drug discovery process. They uncover thousands of new genes, predict their functions and roles in disease, model their three-dimensional structures, and describe their complex mechanisms of regulation and interaction. Moreover, bioinformaticists create the software tools and databases that enable the visualization and analysis of data, ultimately leading to exciting and testable hypotheses. By transforming the raw data of the human genome into useful information, they will enable some of the most impressive advances in drug discovery in the near future."
